I picked up two balls of Regia from my stash without too much thought for the colours because I was going to try it, rip it out, and put the yarn back in my stash… but the knitting needles took control. It was time to use up a stashed yarn that was bought without a clear purpose.
These socks were knit from the top down with the intention of using just the Regia Design Line “Garden Effects” yarn, but the more ribbing I knit the more I knew that this yarn needed help from a friend to make it interesting. I added in a ball of grey Regia that appears almost purple-blue next to the the pinks and reds from the Garden Effects yarn. Stripes to the rescue!

On my travels I bought the 2.5mm sock knitting needles I knew I’d be needing at some point… and then I couldn’t help but start on another pair of socks with a ball of Regia yarn I’d picked up on my first few days in Helsinki.

I’ve been watching images of amazing knitted socks passing by in my Pinterest feed and decided I had to give them a go.
Pattern first
I knew that I needed a pattern. After some googling I found myself a briefly described and photographed basic knit sock pattern (this link goes directly in to a PDF in Finnish) from yarn manufacturer, Novita.
Equipment
A long time ago I was given a bunch of double-pointed needles which I dug up but I realised they were all sets of four. I’d looked at enough photos to know that I needed a set of five so off I went to the craft shop and picked up a set of 5 bamboo 3.25mm needles. Continue reading →
