Edit: 16 November 2013
I’ve now made these socks a few times so I’ve adjusted the original pattern to try and make it easier to follow. The old pattern is available if you have been using it, but I’d recommend using the one below if you’re starting out.
I made up my own pattern for some crochet socks however they roughly borrowed from the Stitch to Stitch pattern I wrote about recently.
I varied the pattern by crocheting two yarns at once (a black and a dark blue) of Lincraft Cosy Wool (100% wool, 100g/174m) with a 6mm hook to make a thicker sock, and I double crocheted (rather than half-double crocheted) the foot to work up the socks quicker.
I have also made this pattern by crocheting two yarns at once of Moda Vera Pure Wool 8 ply (100% wool, 50g/80m) with a 7mm hook to make it a bit more roomy.
I’m still learning to write patterns but tried to jot down the pattern using US crochet terms as I went. I will give this a go another time and try to photograph the steps. I’ve included some photographs in the pattern at key steps.
Here’s the pattern for my foot based on these approximate shoe sizes:
Women’s Australian/US: 9
Women’s European: 40
Women’s UK: 7
Key – US Crochet Terms:
sc = single crochet
slst = slip stitch
st = stitch
dc = double crochet
hdc = half-double crochet
* * = repeat the stitches until the end of the row
[] = total number of stitches in that round
Making the toe
row 1: 6 x sc in magic ring, slst to join [6]
row 2: 3 chain and dc in the same stitch, 2dc in each st, slst in to the 3rd stitch in the chain to join [12]
row 3: 3 chain, dc in the same st, dc in next st, *2dc in next st, dc in next st*, slst in to the 3rd stitch in the chain to join [18]
row 4: 3 chain, dc in the same st, 1 dc in each of the next two st, *2dc, 1 dc each in next two st*, slst in to the 3rd stitch in the chain to join [24]
at this point the piece should comfortably cover the toes
Making the foot
row 5-13: 3 chain, dc in each st, slst in to the 3rd stitch in the chain to join [24]
at this point the piece will reach to approximately 2 inches from the back of the heel
Making the heel – decreasing
you will now make some “steps” to create the bottom of the heel
row 14: 1 chain, sc in the next 12 st
row 15: 1 chain, turn the piece, sc in the first stitch following the chain, then sc in next 10 st
row 16: 1 chain, turn the piece, sc in the first stitch following the chain, then sc in next 9 st
row 17: 1 chain, turn the piece, sc in the first stitch following the chain, then sc in next 8 st
row 18: 1 chain, turn the piece, sc in the first stitch following the chain, then sc in next 7 st
row 19: 1 chain, turn the piece, sc in the first stitch following the chain, then sc in next 6 st
Row 20: 1 chain, turn the piece, sc in the first stitch following the chain, then sc in next 5 st
at this point you should have a few little “steps” on each side from the decreasing number of stitches in each row
Making the heel – increasing
Row 21: 1 chain, turn the piece, sc in the first stitch following the chain, 5 x sc, 1 sc in the side of the step, slst in to the last st from the step row
row 22: 1 chain, turn the piece, skip the chain and slst, 7 x sc, 1 sc in the side of the step slst in to the last st from the step row
row 23: 1 chain, turn the piece, skip the chain and slst, 8 x sc, 1 sc in the side of the step, slst in to the last st from the step row
row 24: 1 chain, turn the piece, skip the chain and slst, 9 x sc, 1 sc in the side of the step, slst in to the last st from thestep row
row 25: 1 chain, turn the piece, skip the chain and slst, 10 x sc, 1 sc in the side of the step, slst in to the last st from the step row
row 26: 1 chain, turn the piece, skip the chain and slst, 11 x sc, 1 sc in the side of the step, slst in to the last st from the step row
Making the ankle and up
row 27+: hdc around and around until it’s a good height and weave in end. On the first time around, I tend to add a few hdcs in the area where the heel/foot/ankle join to end up with around 27 hdcs to the first round and then I just keep working in a spiral (rather than in rows with joins).
